Just dicovered tv flyback transformer and their use to create jacobs ladders etc.

Already new about car ignition coils but they can be fairly expensive even second hand where as you can get the flybacks from discarded tvs. I believe the ignition coils also have a high current draw compared to the flybacks.

Found a suitable driver circuit more the modern flybacks with inbuilt diodes but can't get some components from Jaycar:

C1815 transitor
A1015 transister
IRF630 MOFSET
TVR10G

Can get all of these from RS Australia but the MOFSET comes in a pack of 10 and the diodes in a pack of 100.
I know they dont cost that much even in these quantities but what the hell am I going to do with 100 diodes????

Does anyone know of any other company where I might be able to get these components in smaller quantities via mail order or is anyone in here prepared to sell me a small quantity of each of these?

Welcome to the forum.

A quick look shows Aztronics stock all the items except for the diode, and i found no information on the diode part number listed, so i am unsure on what is so special about that diode.

You might like to send the boys at Aztronics an email asking about the parts, as they are a helpfull bunch there and will do mail orders, in fact some are members of this forum.

sales@aztronics.com.au

From my fiddling with flyback transformers the ones out of the OLD TVs are best (old wood boxed TVs) and often if you take the chunk of PCB around the flyback there is suitable transistors and diodes on the board that can be used.

Put your finger in the wrong spot and you will know why they are called flyback transformers. (more like rip your arm off transformers to get away)

If this is any help, here is the circuit design I am using: http://leoricksimon.blogspot.com.au/200 ... river.html

But obvioiusly this fellow has shortened the component codes because the A1015 transister is actually 2SA1015, or at least that is what I found in Multisim.

I have found plenty of A1015s and C1815s on tv circuit boards, but it would be nice to have some new ones with the full leads for testing purposes.

Was just looking up the datsheet for a RGP10J diode and it seems to be equivalent to a TVR10G (600V, 1A, 30A). I just pulled some of these off a circuit board.

Yes i did find a data sheet for the TVR10G diode and also found the RGP10J listed to be a replacement.

I am not sure, but think the SF5408 diode will also work in your application and Aztronics list them as stock.

Hi Greg, Welcome to the group. I too have had a play with a few flybacks and I am still playing with a Tasla coil that I put together some time back. Nothing like a big spark :P

Did you purchase all your components or did you salvage them all or some of them.

If you did a bit of salvaging, what sort of device would you expect to find an IRF630?

Microwave oven? PC power supply? I have looked in a few tv circuit boards with no luck.

There is always more than one component that will do the job, you could just find a substitute.

Or perhaps quicker and cheaper than searching through a pile of junk, would be to contact Aztronics and have them post you a couple of IRF630 , as they list them as stock. (659 of them in fact)

Emailed them but they have not replied as yet.
